the long way home

The story starts inside giant metal man made tunnels hidden under the sands of the Chihuahuan desert a shadowy figure is walking down making their way further down where people are working. Machines flashing and making strange noises, wires flowing from one end of the room to another well in a corner a child sits behind bars like an animal in a zoo being watched by dozens of eyes but all she does is smile and giggle a little while listening to the people discuss her fate.

“We’ll see what makes mutants tick,” says one

“I can’t wait to see what see looks like on the inside,” agrees the other

Meanwhile down a motorway Gambit and Jean Grey are on a mission to the Chihuahuan desert to find the M.G.S.L, which stands for the Mutant Gene Slicing Lab. These human run labs are hidden under the Chihuahuan dessert they are use for capturing, experimenting and dissecting mutants. The reason they are finding this lab is to find other mutants held captive and to shut down the labs.

Professor Xavier has been following two mutants who have been captured at one of these labs or so he thinks. So he sends Jean Grey and Gambit to find and rescue them then shut down the lab.

Gambit and Jean Grey discuss and argue their mission from Professor Xavier. Jean explains the details to Gambit and the importance of the mission, but all Gambit cares about is his so-called Cheri namely Rouge.

“I can’t wait to get this over and done with, for my Cheri awaits me” Gambit said excited

“Rouge shall be fine” Jean exclaims

“If you didn’t want to leave then you should of said so” jean said

“Weren’t my fault I came wit’ you the professor made me sayin’ I was the appropriate person for you to work with, or somethin’ like that” he explained

“If the professor sent you then you must be useful” she said hiding a small giggle

All Gambit can reply is “This is gonna be a long trip”

Back to where the little girl is. The people there were getting ready, ready for the surgery and experiments. They laid out scalpels and put on protective clothing, the girl was strapped to a cold metal table once again she giggled at them knowing that in just a few seconds they would all disappear and she was right the people who were surrounding her were all vanished one by one. Another girl soon set her free, her friend. Things were going according to their plan like it has done before. More guards came into the room armed to the teeth with guns and ammunition but it didn’t matter as they vanished in an instant by the little girl. When all the humans had gone they continued buy taking things that could be of value and then destroying what was left of the lab until nothing was left but a pile of rubble.

A few hours later Jean and Gambit arrived shocked at what they found. A crater with burned metal, broken glass and rubble everywhere.

“Looks like someone left the gas on and lit a match” Gambit joked

“This isn’t the time for jokes,” Jean said

Jean could not understand what had happened. She started to examine the wreckage. There could have been a number of things that could of caused this much damage but with the lab being underground the most logical explanation was the mutants. But the most confusing was the fact that there were no bodies of the workers. She pulled out an electronic map to decide where they should go next Gambit pointed out a park a living desert state park not far from where they were in Carlsbad. They began to head towards it. Jean’s guard was up because she could feel something that was not right.

The two girls were not in the town when the oldest girl sensed Gambit and Jean following them they hid and waited for them to confront them. When Jean and Gambit came close to the girls Jean stopped because she knew they were hiding just in front of them and called them out. The two girls showed themselves Jean began explaining the situation about the X-men.

“The school is a safe place sort of a haven for mutants even for those who have been abandoned by their families” Jean Explained

The oldest girl showed no interest while the youngest asked questions

“How many are there mutants? Is there cake? Are there lots of toys?”

Tension started to rise between them so Gambit introduced himself and Jean the girls introduced themselves as Dream and Nightmare. Jean asked again if they wanted to join the X-men, the oldest gave a hesitating answer.

“It is tempting but we have things to finish” Nightmare replied

“Killing more people and destroying buildings,” Jean yelled

“If you knew what those buildings were and what those people do you would do the same” Nightmare hissed

“We know what they doing in those lab,” Jean said calmly

Jean tried to convince them that the X-men were thing to do something about the labs and trying to convince them into coming with them and after so much talk Nightmare’s temper ran short and gave a final answer.

“We’ll come with you only when we finished what we started until then do not interfere”

After she said that Gambit disagreed and said that seems a bit harsh but his sentence was cut short when Nightmare knocked him off his feet and then knocked over Jean and warned them once again to stay away and vanished. Jean and Gambit got to their feet.

“Well now what?” Gambit asked

She explained that there was another lab but it was far from where they were. Gambit could not believe they had to walk it.

“Oh C’mon we have to walk it?” he said shocked

“Yes we do” Jean answered

“Can’t we just hire that jet you use?” he asked

“No, we don’t want to arouse suspicion” she replied
